MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Hilbert College softball team opened their 2012 season with two losses on day one of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic March 10. The Hawks hit the ball well and played good defense in both games. But in the fifth inning, Johnson State and Keystone State rallied to win each game.
In the morning game, senior Jill Martucci finished with two doubles going three for five at the plate. Senior Halsey Baker had two doubles as well and Kateland Ball earned two hits for the blue and white. Junior Emily Ripley went the distance striking six out in the 11-7 loss to Johnson State (VT).
Junior Devan Jonathan went five innings and earned four strikes outs before senior Allison Hall closed the game with two strike outs in the 9-7 loss to Keystone State (PA). Martucci had two hits and Ball finished with one double and one single. Ripley, freshman Rachel Collier and junior Rebecca Elensky each were credited with two hits in the afternoon match.
Hilbert returns to the diamond tomorrow to square off against Johnson State and Drew University.
