HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College women’s soccer team lost an AMCC battle, 4-3, against rival D’Youville College October 11. The Hawks (7-6, 2-3) gained momentum in the second period, but the Spartans (4-7-1, 3-3) never lost their early lead and hung on for the victory.
Two quick goals in the first half, both by D’Youville’s Danielle Gehen, were enough to wake up the Hawks for the remainder of the game. Hilbert’s Sarah Schmidt opened the scoring with an early goal in the second period (60:46). The Spartans answered back with two goals before the Hawks had a chance to respond. Hilbert’s Alyssa Hulbert fired in a long shot into the lower corner of the net making it 4-2.
Schmidt came up big again for the Hawks when teammate Jill Martucci fed her the ball that gave her her second goal of the game. That goal at 87:53 closed out the scoring for the night. D’Youville out-shot Hilbert 14-7 for the match.
The Hilbert women are on the road for two AMCC games before returning back home to host Penn State Altoona on October 22 in their final home contest of the season. They next travel to La Roche October 15 for a 3 pm contest.
