HAMBURG, NY – Exploding for a season-high 45 second-half points, the Hilbert College men’s basketball team sprinted to a 78-51 non-conference win over visiting Cazenovia College (1-2) November 20. With only a four-point half time hold, the Hawks turned up the heat, picked up their defense and scored in transition the last twenty minutes of the night. Anthony Hodge’s 7-8 from the foul line lifted him to game-high honors of 18 points. Cazenovia’s Matt Perry carried his Wildcats in the first half and finished with 16 tallies by the final horn.

Hilbert forced 12 turnovers and picked up nine steals, held the rebounding, shooting percentage and made foul shots advantage over Cazenovia during the first half. But the Wildcats’ were five of nine from long distance while the Hawks made only one of ten attempts. Perry, himself, was unstoppable shooting from well downtown making four of five.

After a brief intermission, both teams still were feeling each out until 14:29 when Nick Nadeau hit his three-pointer to start the 33-13 run for Hilbert. The Hawk played tougher defense on the perimeter forcing bad Wildcat shots that led to long rebounds and fast breaks; Hilbert held a 12-0 lead in fast break points for the second half only.

Firing on all cylinders was Trevor Stark {in photo to right} who had an almost perfect game. He went six for six from the floor (1-1 long distance), four rebounds, five assists and six steals to finish with 13 points. Dan McFarland’s 12 points lifted him into the sixth place (1,219) in the Hilbert All-Time scoring list jumping ahead of Hall of Famer, Sam Gioia ’05Mike Jones was active on the boards, pulling down eight for Hilbert.

Cazenovia’s Daniel Cunningham chipped in 12 points and dished four assists and Robert Rohrig was credited with game-high nine rebounds in the losing effort.

Hilbert (2-1) has a few days off before they come back together for their next game at Alfred November 24 with a 4 pm tip.
