April 2011 Athlete of the Month
Ryan Wagner, from the men’s lacrosse team, has been named Hilbert College’s Student-Athlete of the Month for April, 2011.
Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) controlled face-offs and had a hot stick during a rainy season leading the Hawks in scoring (24 goals) five of the six games and was the primary face-off middie four of the six games (winning 94 of the 141 fights). Hilbert completed their inaugural season as an independent institution with a 6-6 overall record going 2-4 in April.
The academic sophomore’s most impressive game was April 14 against Morrisville State when he picked up 27 ground balls, won 32 of 41 face-offs, scored 6 goals and assisted on one other goal in the team’s 26-15 loss. Throughout the season, the freshman (based on athletic eligibility) has been ranked in the top 15 spots in the Division III national lacrosse individual standings.
At the completion of his season, Wagner sat at the #2 spot in goals a game (3.75), #3 in ground balls per game (11.58), #4 in points per game (5.17) and #12 in face-off percentage (.664). His efforts assisted in Hilbert’s national team rankings at #4 in ground balls per game (45.58), #17 in scoring offense (13.33), #18 in points per game (20.83) and #24 in face-off percentage (.594).
For the season, Wagner led in points (62: 45 goals/17 assists), shots on goal (78), ground balls (139) and face-offs (144).
Wagner is pursuing a degree in criminal justice and carries a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.
