Welcome to Human Services!

Human Services is one of the fastest growing professions in the country and you can be a part of it! Offering a wide variety of concentrations and internship sites, Hilbert's Human Services major is a skills-oriented, interdisciplinary program designed to prepare you for a meaningful career in both public and private agency and school based settings. You'll have the opportunity to explore areas of work with young children, adolescents, adults, families, and specific populations in a variety of practice settings. Students may tailor their coursework to focus on specific issues such as substance abuse, family violence, rehabilitation services, or child and family law. You will have the opportunity to learn counseling techniques, case management skills, and case/cause advocacy.  Students will learn about the importance of community environments and methods designed to help individuals, families, neighborhoods and communities develop strong, empowered networks of support.
The curriculum is designed to teach you how to work with
people of all ages who experience a wide variety of
social, emotional and economic difficulties.

The extensive
internship program offered to human services students provides our graduates with practical, applied experiences aimed at better preparing them for employment upon graduation. Hilbert's unique program will help you develop as a professional who can make a difference in people's lives and in the community.

Our professors have extensive field experience in Human Services, adding an important, real-world dimension to your learning environment. Members of our faculty have professional experience in a variety of settings including state and local agencies, family service agencies, substance abuse services, schools, and programs for people with disabilities. Faculty has also remained active as volunteers within their communities in order to further their skills and stay current on issues of relevance to the field and students. Several have been recognized for excellence in the field by professional organizations such as the National Association of Social Workers and the Erie County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

For those students wishing to pursue advanced degrees, the program also provides a solid foundation designed to prepare you for graduate work in areas such as social work, psychology, or agency or school counseling. You will have an opportunity to work closely with faculty advisors to create a course of study that meets with your individual needs and skills.
