AURORA, NY – Fueled by sophomore Sarah Lorusso’s five points, the Hilbert College women’s lacrosse team put up a good fight on the road, but suffered a 16-8 loss to Wells College April 2. The Hawks produced their second highest goal total this season but couldn’t contain the Express (2-3 overall) in the opening period as they drop to 1-3 overall.
Lorusso put the visitors on the board first just 64 seconds into the game to give Hilbert it’s only lead in the contest, 1-0. Wells’ Marina Fargnoli led a furious comeback scoring three quick goals within the next eight minutes of competition. The Express padded their efforts with four more hits and held an 8-1 advantage wtih 14:07 remaining.
Lorusso and sophomore Rachel Bergman each found the back of the net twice before half time, cutting the score to 13-5.
After intermission, the Hawks and the Express played even as both squads struck for 3 goals each. Freshman Kelly Mandell and senior Nicole Blair, who earned her first collegiate goal, joined Lorusso with second half scores.
Junior Robbi Baily had a strong defensive game forcing 4 Wells turn-overs and scooped up five ground balls. Senior Caitlyn Jacobs was also credited with 5 ground balls. Bergman was a perfect 2 for 2 on free position shots and Lorusso earned the Hawks lone assist, setting up Mandell’s second half goal.
Hilbert finished with 14 shots, 24 ground balls and converted three of their four free-position shots. Wells won 18 of the 26 draw controls and earned 15 clears, bettering Hilbert by four.
The Hawks travel to All High Stadium Thursday, April 4th for a 3 pm (game time change) contest against cross-town rival, Medaille College. Hilbert then has a nine-day break with their next game set for April 13 in Hamburg against Franciscan University at 12 pm.
