ERIE, PA – With the weather still impacting the playability of softball diamonds in April, the Hilbert College softball team traveled to Penn State Behrend April 11 for a home AMCC double header. In the early game, the Hawks roared back from an 11-1 second inning deficit only to fall short 16-10. After losing a key player to injury, the Hawks were shut-out in the late 5-inning game 9-0.
Behrend took an early 4-run lead after their first at bat, off four hits and two Hawk errors. When Hilbert stepped up to the plate, pitcher Emily Ripley (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) opened with her first double for the game. She was knocked home by Halsey Baker (Scio, NY/Scio) cutting the lead to three runs before the inning turned.
At the top of the 2nd, the Lions 4th batter hit a home run (3RBI) separating the scores again; Hilbert committed four errors which contributed to additional scored runs. With the score 11-1 in the bottom of the 3rd, Ripley doubled once more and pushed Amber Grosch (Depew, NY/Depew) home for her first score of the day.
Hilbert held Behrend in check for three solid innings while they chipped away at the lead. Jill Martucci (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) homered driving 3 runs in the 4th inning; Baker was sent home by Allison Hall’s (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) single in the 5th; and Grosch and Martucci scored again off another Ripley double in the 6th.
Behrend hit for 5 runs in the top of the 7th after a 3-run double kept their rally alive and pushed the score to 16-9 heading into the final half inning. The Hawks could only collect one more run in the bottom of the inning and fell short of their come-back victory.
Hilbert hit (.405) with Ripley going 3 for 5 scoring 2 runs (3RBI, 3 doubles) and going the distance on the mound. She pitched the full rotation facing 45 batters and striking out 4 with only 1 walk. Martucci scored 3 runs (2 for 5) with 3RBI off her one home run.
Shortstop Amber Grosch made a awakward catch in the top of the first inning of the second game, and did not return to play after that. The Hawks held Behrend scoreless until the 2nd inning when the Lions Chloe Vernon tripled, scoring 2 quick runs. The Hawks couldn’t muster an offensive response in the bottom of the inning, and struggled in the 3rd inning as Behrend ripped off 5 more runs, building a 7-0 lead. Hilbert couldn’t connect their bats to the softballs and went the game scoreless with a 9-0 loss after 5 innings. Devan Jonathan (Basom, NY/Akron) took the loss for the Hawks facing 26 batters. Hilbert had only 15 at-bats, with Baker, and Samantha Tedesco (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Chelsea Reischuck (South Wales/East Aurora) getting the only hits.
The Hawks (1-12, 0-4) travel once again this week when they head down Route 219 to face Pitt-Bradford on Thursday, April 14.
