New Rochelle, NY - The Hilbert College women's basketball team traveled to the NYC area to secure their first win after eighty one losses dating back to the 2006-07 season. The Hawks beat the College of New Rochelle 69-36 making this a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
The Hawks took a 26-17 lead into half time due, in part, to the doubled-up rebounding advantage (30-15). Junior forward Julie Bossard (Arkport, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) produced 9 points/9 rebounds in 19 minutes. Hilbert figured it out during the 15 minute break that they could turn their fortune around. The Hawks outscored the College of New Rochelle 43-19 in the final stanza running away with the sweet win.
Hilbert dressed six players and they all contributed to the victory. Bossard was leading scorer with 22 points (14 rebounds, 3 blocks) but she had strong support from junior Mary Zinni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) who poured in 18 points. Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Bennett/ECC) found her touch with 16 points and 4 steals. The junior transfer grabbed 8 boards and dished for 4 assists. It was sophomore Amber Grosch (Depew, NY/Depew) who led all rebounders with 16 off the glass. Freshman Raven Jones (Rochester, NY/Rush Henrietta) went 6-8 from the foul line and dished for the team-leading 5 assists to pair with her 4 steals. Westfield native Stephanie Zachary didn't score, but she did give quality minutes and produced 2 rebounds and 2 assists in the win. Sophomore Katie Newton was not able to play due to an injury, but she was a loud and encouraging teammate on the bench.
Up next for the Hawks is Alfred University on Saturday, November 27th when the men’s and women’s teams travel together to Alfred for a 2 and 4 pm double header.
