The women’s volleyball team showed signs of improvement during Amanda Logue’s second season as the head coach at Hilbert College. The idea that eight athletes could be competitive in the 24-match schedule was a stretch, but the Hawks prepared mentally for the challenge and gave it their best shot. For the first time since joining the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the women’s volleyball team grabbed one set (of the match) from league opponents who previously dominated them, as well, improved their AMCC record. The Hawks increased the number of sets played this season, which correlated to a higher number of points scored in 2010.

Leading the way were seniors Amanda Dudek (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) and Carole Jones (Bliss, NY/Letchworth). After transferring into Hilbert her sophomore year, Dudek was a three-year athlete while Jones was a four-year player. Both were dependable guides and led the team in position-specific statistics. Jones finished her final campaign averaging 2.2 kills per set and led the team in blocks. Dudek became the libero her senior year leading the team in digs.

Supporting the seniors were sophomores Brittany Baum (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown), Rachel Kwiatkowski (West Seneca, NY/Orchard Park), Devan Jonathan (Basom, NY/Akron) and Val Janiga (North Collins, NY/North Collins). The core group of second year players showed maturity and dedication, doing whatever they could do make the season a success.

The two first-year players were big additions to the roster in 2010. Shannon Memminger (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was the quarterback of the squad touching 90 percent of all volleyed balls. She led the team with 443 assists and 40 service aces. Outside hitter Chelsea Reischuck (South Wales, NY/East Aurora) led in kills (185), tied Janiga with service aces (34) and tied Dudek with digs (159). The freshmen and Janiga were the only players who played in every set during the season.

Hilbert completed the 2010 season with a 6-18 overall record and were 2-7 AMCC which put them in eight place.  Read the season recap notes <here>.
