Amherst, NY: The Hilbert Softball team (8-6) swept D’Youville College on Thursday night at the Amherst Pepsi Center earning a 5-1 victory and an 10-8 comeback victory. The wins even the Hawks AMCC conference record at 2-2.
In the second game of the evening, runs were traded back and forth between the two teams as Hilbert and D’Youville were tied at 3-3 after four innings of play.
D’Youville broke open the scoring in the fifth inning as five runs would go up on the board for the Spartans off of four hits and three errors committed by the Hawks defense.
Being down five runs heading into the bottom of the fifth was an all too familiar situation for the Hawks. Olivia Battle (Rochester, NY/ James Monroe) started off the comeback with a triple after driving the ball to right center field. Four batters later, Rachel Parker (Hamburg, NY/ Hamburg) would send a deep ball into the outfield giving Hilbert their second triple of the inning. Parker would reach home on a passed ball matching D’Youville’s five runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 8-8.
Amanda Ratajczak (Cheektowaga, NY/ Maryvale) continued the offensive momentum for the Hawks in the bottom of the sixth earning Hilbert's third triple of the game. The triple would send Battle around the bases to score after she earned a base due to being hit by a pitch during her at bat. Senior Carrie Sisson (Elma, NY/ Mt. Mercy Academy) earned an RBI off a single to right field. Ratajczak would score giving the Hawks a 10-8 edge.
Ratajczak’s triple in the sixth would mark the first time this season triples were hit in back to back innings.
With the go-ahead run at home plate and two outs, D’Youville’s Brittany Barren crushed a ball into center field. Amber Grosch (Depew, NY/ Depew) was there to make the catch sealing the sweep for Hilbert.
In the previous game Sisson would earn her second pitching victory of the year with the decisive 5-1 win. Freshman Emili Ripley (Batavia, NY/ Notre Dame Catholic) led the Hawks offense with 2 RBI’s, two hits and one run scored.
Hilbert will face Medaille College on Wednesday, April 7, for their third conference matchup of the year. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at McCarthy Park in North Buffalo.
