HAMBURG, N.Y. – Matt Phifer, who assisted in guiding the Genesee Community College Lady Cougars to the team’s highest ranking in the college’s history, has been named head women’s basketball coach at Hilbert College, announced director of athletics Richard Walsh.

“Matt possesses all the qualities to be a successful Division III coach,” said Walsh. “With his recent experience at GCC and proven accomplishments, I’m confident he will be highly effective in recruiting top-notch student-athletes and in building Hilbert’s women’s basketball program. He is a great addition to our coaching staff.”

As assistant coach at GCC, Phifer helped lead the Lady Cougars to win the Region III National Junior College Athletic Association Division II title, earning the team a spot in the national tournament. The Cougars also ranked sixth nationally and were undefeated in conference play.

Prior to GCC, Phifer spent three seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Jamestown Community College, where he was the youngest head coach in the Western New York Athletic Conference of the NJCAA Region III.
Phifer coached several All-Conference and All-Region players, the first-ever JCC student-athletes to receive these honors, and sent several players on to Division I, II and III schools. Under his direction, the men’s team consistently finished in the top five in scoring in Region III.

He also developed a men’s basketball league team at Rock of Revelation Church in Olean, where he led the team to the third best record in the Olean church league, and coached the league MVP and Most Improved Player. He was named the 2003 Men’s League Coach of Year.

A native of Dallas, Phifer played high school basketball in Little Elm and The Colony, Texas.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in human services from Empire State College.

Phifer resides in Tonawanda.
