Hawks Win First Volleyball Match

Beverly, MA – Baruch College (NY) won the 2011 Endicott Invitational tournament and finished the weekend 4-0 after defeating Emmanuel College, 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 25-16), in the championship game. Hilbert College moved to the Bronze play-off bracket and split their games on day two of the tourney improving their record to 1-11.
Baruch’s Pablo Oliveira (Uberlandia, Brazil) led the way offensively and defensively, registering team highs with 16 kills and four blocks. Jesus Echevarria (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added 39 assists in the win as the Bearcats improved to 10-9 on the year. Echevarria and senior outside hitter Kirill Yagnetinskiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each had nine digs.
Adam Weaver (Stow, OH/Archbishop Hoban) led the Hawks with 12 kills and 11 digs in the 4-set loss (25-16, 25-12, 23-25, 25-16) to Hunter College February 13. Hilbert was active at the net, with five different players contributing in the blocking column. Dan Wolfe (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) led the group with five blocks while Weaver, fellow freshman Fred Sickau (Eden, NY/Eden) and sophomore Anthony Blasz (Eden, NY/Eden) each had their paws on four blocks apiece. Wolfe and RJ Sykora (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) shared duties in day two as the setter for the team. Against Hunter, Wolfe passed for 20 assists (five blocks) and Sykora followed closely behind with 14 assists (15 digs). Stanley Martinez registered 47 assists, eight digs, three aces and a pair of blocks to lead Hunter in their first win of the weekend.
In the second match of the day, Hilbert won the battle at the net (32 total blocks) and captured their first win of the season in their 4-set victory (25-13, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19) over Emerson. Weaver guided Hilbert with a team-high 18 kills and five blocks while Sykora tallied 35 assists and seven blocks. Wolfe rotated to an outside hitter and chopped down 10 kills with 23 digs and six blocks.
The Most Valuable Player honor was awarded to Pablo Oiveira (SR, Uberlandia, Brazil) from Baruch College. Joining him on the All-Tournament team was Hilbert’s Adam Weaver (the only freshman selected), Emmanuel’s Curtis Abram (Sr., San Luis Obispo, CA), MIT’s Tim Lee (Sr., Natick, MA), Vassar’s Evan Fredericksen (Sr., Menlo Park, CA), EMU’s Chris Moise (So., Hollywood, FL), Endicott’s Andrew Slocum (Jr., Burnt Hills, NY), SUNYIT’s Ryan Meller (Jr., Eden, NY), and Emerson’s Steve Selnick (Jr., Cheshire, CT).
Hilbert returns to WNY with an overall 1-11, 0-2 UVC record, but they bring an attitude of confidence. Up next for the Hawks is a home match February 19 against upstart Elmira College with a 1 pm match.
