Hawks Host Tri Match

HAMBURG, NY: On Sunday January 24, the Hawks hosted a tri match in Hafner Gymnasium. Despite the strong effort from the young Hilbert squad, the Hawks fell to both opponents, Johnson and Wales University and D’Youville College in four games. The two losses drop Hilbert’s record to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association.

In the first match of the day Hilbert faced Johnson and Wales University from Providence, Rhode Island. RJ Sykora (Stow, OH/Munroe Falls) had a team high and season high six aces. Along with his dominant serving, he also added 14 kills on the day.  Vince Amico (Buffalo, NY/ Bishop Timon- St. Jude) continued his strong passing game tallying 44 assists in four games. Dan Wolfe (Rochester, NY/ Irondequoit) played solid on the defensive end leading the team with 21 digs. The Hawks started off slow the first game falling 22-30. The momentum started to change after the second game’s loss 29-31 which led to a 30-28 victory for Hilbert in game three. The final game would be a 16-30 decision in favor of Johnson and Wales defeating the Hawks in four games (3-1).
 
With only 40 minutes in between games the Hawks hit the hardwood again to take on D’Youville College. The action in the first and second games saw D’Youville victorious defeating Hilbert 15-30 and 22-30. The Hawks remained poised however taking the third game from the Spartans, 30-28. The 12-30 result in the fourth game would decide the match giving D’Youville a 3-1 win on the day. Wolfe would lead the Hawks again in digs recording 16, while Amico added another 23 assists to his season total.
 
The Hawks will play in the SUNYIT tournament on January 30 & 31, before they return home on Wednesday, February 3, to take on Medaille College for a NECVA conference game.
