STEUBENVILLE, OH – Twelve different players contributed goals in Hilbert’s 20-3 road win over Franciscan University March 24. John Pingitore led with 4 hits and Brendan Kane followed close behind with 3 of his own. Sean Purtill finished with 5 assists while earning 2 scores. William Wagner stood strong between the pipes making 4 saves as Hilbert improved to 3-2 and Franciscan, a first-year program, dropped to 1-7.
Hilbert opened the game with back-to-back scores with six minutes left in the first quarter and took a 3-0 lead by the break. The Hawks exploded with nine second-period goals to make it 11-0 by half time. Purtill earned 4 straight assists, feeding Doug Takac (twice), Nick Kieffer, and Pingitore.
After intermission, Franciscan found their rhythm on offensive and snuck two balls past Wagner in the 3rd and one in the 4th, but the Hawks still controlled the game.
Hilbert jumped out to a 28-8 advantage in shots in the first half and settled for a 59-12 final tally. The Hawks won 22 of the 25 face-offs and were able to clear 16 of their 21 attempts. Franciscan won the ground ball battle (31-27) and Evan Malchano made 15 saves in goal.
The Hawks will host their first NEAC league game against Cobleskill at the Nichols School in North Buffalo on Saturday, March 30. The men’s game will begin after the 12 pm women’s game against Cazenovia College.
