Hilbert Hits The Road

HAMBURG, NY – Spring break is here at Hilbert College.
All four spring sport teams have hit the road seeking warmer pastures to train and prepare for their traditional seasons in Western New York. The Baseball team departed for Fort Pierce, Florida while the men’s lacrosse and softball teams traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The women’s lacrosse team stayed closer to home, playing two games in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio.
Softball opened the week Sunday, March 9 with a 11-1 loss to Johnson State. That game was the Hawks first time outside the four walls of the Hafner Center in Hamburg. The next morning, Hilbert squared off against the same opponent from Vermont and improved, losing the morning game (2-0) before they rebounded for an 11-7 victory.
The men’s lacrosse team played their second game of the season, but their first in warm weather on March 9th. The Catholic University earned a 19-9 win while senior John Pingitore finished with 4 goals and an assist for the Hawks.
Women’s lacrosse played their first scrimmage away from the New York area when they faced Grove City College March 9th. The well-oiled club team grabbed a 14-5 victory and gave the Hawks a taste of college lacrosse as they begin their first year as a Division III program.
The team who traveled the furthest didn’t waste any time getting out on the field and tossing the ball around. After their 24-hour bus ride, Hilbert dropped a double-header to Delaware Valley (12-6, 4-2) March 10th. Senior Garrett Pauly took the loss in 3-innings of work while freshman Matt Goraj followed with 3-solid innings before Andrew Cartaginese finished the final 3 outs; junior Joe Pernick had 2 hits in the morning game. Freshman Colby Parachoniak went 5-innings (sophomore Justin Hulbert 1-inning) as the Hawks found some life in their appearances at the plate as seniors Chris Hoak and Ryan Ilardi connected for two hits each.
