ELMIRA, NY - Elmira College prevented a two-game win streak for Hilbert College when the Soaring Eagles defeated the Hawks 3-0 in men’s volleyball February 29. Junior Scott Ross earned seven kills and finished with two blocks as the Hawks (3-11, 1-6) dropped a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) league match to the 15-9 (5-2 UVC) Eagles.
Ross was a workhorse at the net going pin to pin getting touches on many of Elmira’s attacks. Hilbert got in trouble with their (.015) hitting percentage. The Hawks finished the match with one more kill than error at the net (25-24). Junior Anthony Blasz had eight kills (.231) and five digs in support of Ross’ (.254) hitting. Junior Adam Clabo had team best six digs as did freshman Stephen Phillips with 19 assists. The Hawks played without the services of sophomore Adam Weaver, who was just named as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Week February 27.
Eric Sandmann finished with nine kills and no attacking errors to lead Elmira on their home court.
The Hawks travel to central New York March 3 when they face Wells College (12pm) and Lancaster Bible College (2pm). Hilbert recently beat Wells (0-6) last weekend and have not faced LBC (5-7) yet this season. They have three common opponents with identical results; each team has beaten SUNYIT and lost to Juniata and Thiel earlier this year.
