HAMBURG, NY – With the 68-57 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Pitt-Bradford February 15th, the Hilbert College men’s basketball team secured the fourth place rank in the league standings, which earned them the right to host a first round play-off game February 21. More importantly, the Hawks set a new record of 10 AMCC wins since joining the conference in 2004-05, with one additional game still to be played. Dan McFarland led the Hawk charge with 22 points, seven steals and team-high two blocks as Hilbert improved to 10-7, 13-11 overall. Bradford’s Jesse DeLoff was the only Panther to break double-figure scoring with 10 points.
Both teams struggled to find the rim throughout the contest. Hilbert took a 37-27 half time lead and extended it to as many as 16 (52-36) with 13:08 to go in the second period. But a shooting slump by the Hawks allowed Bradford to close the gap to six points (59-53) with a little over four minutes left in the game. Chris Parrott scored seven of the Hawks final nine points sealing the win for the hosts.
Bradford out rebounded Hilbert (47-35) and shot slightly better than the Hawks (39.3% to 35.4%) but the difference in the game were the turnovers. Hilbert picked the Panthers for 14 steals, and caused 21 turnovers, while the Hawks were credited with their second lowest number of turnovers this season with only eight.
Parrott finished with 18 points, shooting 10 of 11 at the foul line, while CJ Hodge chipping in 13 points, four assists and three steals. Jordan VanDunk was held scoreless but his team-high nine rebounds were important to the Hawks.
The last regular season game, where the team will honor their three seniors, is Saturday, February 18. Chris Hoak, Mike Maritato and Cody Troutman will dress in the whites for their last game before play-offs. Hilbert hosts Penn State Altoona, 2-15 (3-21 overall) at 2pm and the game will be streamed LIVE on UStream.com.
