BUFFALO, NY – In a crucial cross-town AMCC league game, Hilbert College fought back from several double-digit deficits to capture an 86-84 victory in men’s basketball against D’Youville College January 11. Anthony Hodge, a mid-year transfer player, led the comeback charge scoring eight of the team’s final 15 points. Junior Dan McFarland lead the way with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists improving the Hawks record to 4-3 AMCC and evened their overall to 7-7. D’Youville dropped to 5-2 (5-9) with Raysean Johnson earning a game-high 31 points after recently being named as the AMCC Player of the Week.
Hilbert opened the game building a 9 point lead of a Mike Maritato made a three-point field goal (15-6) after the first five minutes of play. In the next five minutes, missed shots and turnovers by the Hawks allowed the Spartans to take the lead and expand it to as many as 14 points with 4:48 left in the half.
D’Youville took their 40-37 half time lead back up to a 74-62 advantage with 5:22 remaining in the game. But strong shooting by the Hilbert team (making 12 of 16 shots, and going 6 for 9 from the foul line), and solid defensive play (forcing four Spartan turnovers) in the game’s final five minutes of play allowed the visitors to come back and grab the important road win.
D’Youville shot the ball better, had seven block shots, worked for three more steals, and had two fewer turnovers than Hilbert. But it was Hilbert who won the battle on the glass outrebounding D’Youville 49-39 (17 offensive) and Hilbert who had better ball management in the game’s final minutes.
Sophomore Jordan VanDunk added 14 points and eight rebounds while Anthony Hodge posted 13 points and a team-best three steals after transferring from Plattsburg and Clinton Community College in January.
D’Youville’s Patrick Coyle finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and six block shots.
Hilbert returns to action this Saturday at home against Mount Aloysius College (3-4, 5-9) at 2pm in the Hafner Recreation Center.
