CAZENOVIA, NY – Hilbert baseball did something they haven’t done yet this season. They took game one of the double header, 5-4, against Cazenovia College April 22 with Ed Sarcione getting the win on the mound. The Hawks then battled to a 7-6 loss in the night cap with Caz doing a come-from-behind performance in the bottom of the seventh to steal the game. Hilbert finished the day with 21 hits.  Ryan LaCorte sent in 3RBI and grabbed one stolen base to move the Hawks to 5-19  after the set of non-conference games.

Sarcione (Eden, NY/Eden) struck out 5 Wildcat batters while giving up 5 runs in his full 7 innings pitched. The Hawks were down 4-3 at the top of the 7th inning when things clicked for the visitors. Matt Militello (Depew, NY/Lancaster) hit his second single for the game before Ryan LaCorte (Cheektowaga, NY/JFK) earned a base on balls. Frank Mancuso (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) singled sending Militello home for the tie then Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) singled sending LaCorte home for the lead.
Sarcione faced three batters in the bottom of the 7th getting two to hit into playable catches; the third batter stuck out swinging to give the sophomore his first win for the season.
The afternoon game was a reverse decision of the earlier match. The Hawks took a 6-5 lead after a big 5th inning but couldn’t hold onto the lead in the end. Frank Casey (Buffalo, NY/Leonardo daVinci) opened with a double and was sent home off a Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) single. Then Militello reached first on a field’s choice knocking Hoak out at second. Militello stole second before LaCorte hit a long homer (2RBI) to give the nod to the Hawks.
Both teams went scoreless their next at bats, until the bottom of the 7th when a passed ball sent the tying run home before the next batter’s single pushed the winning run in to give Cazenovia their first win of the day.
Hilbert hopes to host Greensburg April 23 with AMCC double header beginning at 1pm. After Easter Sunday celebrations, Hilbert will host Penn State Altoona in a rescheduled league game.
