Hamburg, NY - Hilbert’s Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) hit the game winner in the third overtime period with .2  seconds left to secure the 85-83 victory for the men’s basketball team November 23 over Oberlin College. The extra 15 minutes of play was costly for the Yoemen as they lost two key players to foul trouble after the 40 minute game ended in a 61-61 tie. Hilbert improves to 2-2 while Oberlin heads back to Ohio with a 1-1 record.

Leading all scorers with 24 points was Oberlin’s point guard, Josh Merritt. Teammate Andrew Fox  was an impact player contributing 23 points and 10 rebounds before he fouled out with 42 seconds left in the first OT period.   Oberlin’s shooting guard, Pat Bernhard fouled out with 3:46 left into the second overtime but he had already damaged the Hawks for 21 points (5-9 from 3 pt line) by that time.
Hilbert’s Dan McFarland (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary’s) put up 23 points and was 11-13 from the charity stripe to lead three Hawks in double digits. Junior Keon Rembert had a monster game with 15 points, 17 rebounds and 2 back to back blocks. Hoak was on fire the first half going 3-4 from the floor (2-2 from 3 point) and 2-2 from foul line. He cooled off as the game progressed, but hit the big shot when his team needed it most and finished with 14 points.
Hilbert out-rebounded Oberlin (47-43) and held a 14-8 lead in steals, but did not shot the ball as well as the visitors (45.5% to Hilbert’s 37.3%). The Hawks made 26 foul shots but missed 17, 9 total in one of the three overtime periods.
Up next for the Hawks is Alfred University on Saturday, November 27th when the men’s and women’s teams travel together to Alfred for a 2 and 4 pm double header.
