Scranton, PA - Trailing by eight at halftime, Marywood University outscored visiting Hilbert College 31-24 in the second half to rally past the Hawks for a 63-62 season opening win Tuesday evening, November 16. Junior forward Brent Keyes led all scorers with 19 points and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for Marywood. Hilbert’s sophomore eligibility Chris Parrott (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) garnered 18 points to led the 0-1 Hawks.
Both teams would trade leads early and often, but Hilbert would use a quick burst right before the end of the opening frame to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room. Parrott was 4-6 from the field and 3-3 from the charity stripe to lead Hilbert and all scorers with 12 first half points. Dan McFarland (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary’s), Roman Brown (Buffalo, NY/South Park) and Keon Rembert (Bennetsville, SC/Archbishop Walsh) all added eight points by intermission for the Hawks.
In the second half, Marywood's Tyler Reinhard hit a three with 8:30 remaining to give Marywood their first lead, putting the Pacers up 55-52. Hilbert would not get the lead back until CJ Hodge (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) converted a layup with 1:23 remaining (62-61). However, several untimely fouls by the visitors sent Marywood to the line four times over the final minute. James Lavan would tie the game by sinking one of two free throws with 1:02 left and Tyrek Coleman would give the Pacers the one-point win by making one of two with :04 left. A last second long range pass by the Hawks was stolen to end the game.
Hilbert placed four players in double-digits but as a team were a dismal 55% (12-22) from the foul line and gave up 21 offensive boards which contributed to the one point loss.
The Hawks return to action this Friday at their own Tip-Off Tournament in Hamburg. The 6 pm game showcases John Jay College vs. Keuka College leaving Hilbert to host SUNY Morrisville at 8:00 pm.
