BOX SCORE

HAMBURG, NY – Grove City took advantage of a Hilbert College miscue late in the second half of the men’s soccer game and ran away in a 4-1 victory against the Hawks. Hilbert knotted the score 1-1 just before half time when Ed Sarcione scored the Hawks first goal of the season. But the Wolverines controlled the pace of the game and won the little battles to earn the victory, improving their record to 2-2.

Sarcione’s goal came off a David Walkow assist in the 41st minute giving new life to the Hawks. Scott Walker {in photo to right} already made 7 saves by intermission and continued into the second half facing multiple shots on goal. The visitor’s persistent offensive pressure kept the Hawks on their defensive end of the field most of the game. Grove City finished with 19 shots (16 on goal). Hilbert, in contrast, took 4 shots.

When Kyle Matherne scored his second goal of the game (85:32), putting Grove City up 3-1, it seemed that the wind was taken out of Hilbert’s sails. Just over three minutes later, Daniel Adams scored the Wolverines last goal of a scramble in front of the net.

Hilbert (0-3) is home again September 12 when they face Daemen College in a 4pm start.
