Hamburg, NY - The fledgling men’s lacrosse program finished its inaugural fall season October 14th with an exhibition victory (12-9) against the Dirty Dogs alumni. The 2011 varsity team wrapped up the non-traditional season showing both progress and promise.
Limited to only 15 practice days by NCAA rules, the coaching staff, led by head coach Rick Schunke, had only a brief time to evaluate talent and begin to install team offense and defense. “We were pleasantly surprised by the talent level of the team and the progress they have shown so far. While we still have a lot of work to do, we are confident that we can be competitive in our first year of NCAA play” said Schunke.
Included in the fall season was a one-day tournament, hosted by Genesee Community College on October 9th, where the Hawks squared off in scrimmages against the University at Buffalo, Alfred State College and cross-town rival Medaille College. Hilbert got off to a slow start dropping the first contest to UB, but bounced back to dominate the Alfred State contest. Injuries, fatigue, and penalties did the Hawks in during their third consecutive game of the day against Medaille. The Mavericks rolled to a 12-4 victory.
The men’s lacrosse team will open up their regular season in early March with back-to-back road games against Penn State Abington and Alvernia University (March 4 and 5) and host their first home game March 26th against La Roche College.
