Cross Country Grabs 9th Place Finishes

GRAND ISLAND, NY – Franciscan University made a clean sweep at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) cross country championship at Beaver Island State Park October 29. With four of their top five runners finishing in the top 5 slots, the Franciscan men earned 23 points to claim their second straight championship. On the women’s side, with all five scores slotted in the top 9 positions, the Lady Barons claimed their fourth straight championship scoring 24 points. The Hilbert men’s team (309) and the women’s team (351) both finished in ninth place in their final competition of the 2011 season.
Overall team scoring for the men were Franciscan – 23, Behrend – 34, Altoona – 212, Bradford – 212, Medaille – 228, Mount Aloysius – 238, La Roche – 256, Greensburg – 267, Hilbert – 301, and D’Youville – 308.
Franciscan’s William Jones (26:53) captured the men’s race outdistancing fellow Baron, John Kaiser, by eighty seconds. Franciscan’s Kevin Leroy and Penn State Behrend’s Denny Lydon were in a tight race for third place; Leroy leaned at the tape to claim third, although their time was identical at (28:22). Trailing by two seconds was a Franciscan fifth-place finisher Joe Schlueter. Hilbert’s Matt Williams was once again the quickest Hawk runner with a 33:59 8K giving him a 47th place finish. Other Hilbert scores were Aaron Lawrence (35:44) in 56th, John Sadowski (36:54) in 64th, Matt Hunt (37:13) in 66th and Pat Lagueras (38:30) in 68th place. Cameron Haag, Steven Crane and Paul Coleman also competed in the race.
The women’s race rankings were similar to the men’s: Franciscan – 24, Behrend – 31, Altoona – 162, D’Youville – 174, Greensburg – 221, Mount Aloysius – 251, Medaille – 263, Bradford – 331, and Hilbert – 351. The La Roche team was incomplete.
Nicole Krajewski guided the women’s field of runner with a 23:31 5K race leading four other Lady Barons who finished in the top nine slots. Hilbert’s Maria Linares was the top female runner leading the Hawks team for the final time this fall. Linares clocked in at 28:35 earning a 20th place finish. Jackie Downey (38:27) earned a 75th place, Kiara Hilario (49:15) gave her 84points, Jill Cohen’s 85th place finish was at 59:39 and Stephanie Smith (1:05:37) earned an 87th place.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have completed the fall season and look forward to the spring time road races.
