Linares Captures Women’s Race, Williams Top Hilbert Male

HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College men’s and women’s cross country teams took top honors in a 5K dual meet with Pitt-Bradford October 20. Running in a wet and muddy course on the Hilbert campus, Maria Linares {in photo to right} ran 24:20 for the Hawks as the fastest women’s finisher. Bradford’s Jeff Elwell was the first overall racer to cross the finish line as he outdistanced Matt Williams from Hilbert by 66 seconds.

The Hilbert women grabbed points from Linares (1), Jessica Morey (5), Amber Grosch (6), and Kayla Norman (7) to finish with 27 points. Bradford secured 34 points with their five runners for the day. Additional racers whose points did not count for Hilbert were: Maria DelMonaco, Amber Bailey, Allison Hall, Rebecca Elensky, Kiara Hilario, Katie Pettis and Jill Cohen.

The Hilbert men secured the top 5 slots earning 15 points since Bradford finished the race as an incomplete team. Bradford’s Elwell’s 19:29 time beat teammate Sam Mason (20:18) even though their finish places did not count. Hilbert’s Williams {in photo to right} ran 20:35, 33 seconds ahead of teammate John Sadowski. The Hawks’ Aaron Lawrence race a 21:48 beating out Matt Hunt by 61 seconds. Pat Lagueras was the final scorer for Hilbert at 23:36. Other Hilbert runners were Cameron Haag (24:50), Steve Crane (32:53, and Paul Coleman clocked in at 34:31.

The Hawks have the weekend off from races before they gear back up for the AMCC Championship race October 29. Medaille College is hosting the 10-team race at Beaver Island State Park with the women’s 6K race starting at 11 am followed by the men’s 8K at 12 noon.
