HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Gerald Mangan, who has been involved in the Western New York running community for more than 30 years, has been named head coach of Hilbert College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams.

“Jerry has tremendous energy and enthusiasm, which will translate well to our student-athletes,” said Richard Walsh, director of athletics. “His array of contacts in the local running community will be a tremendous asset in his recruiting endeavors.”
Mangan said he is “very excited and anxious to begin working with Hilbert’s student-athletes.  I’m ready for the opportunity to develop successful teams and coach athletes who love the sport as much as I do.”
Mangan’s first coaching stop was for two seasons as head coach of the cross country teams at Niagara County Community College. Under his leadership, one runner qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship and finished in the top 50.
Early in Mangan’s running career, he was a track and field star. He became a long distance runner, including competing in the Pittsburgh, Boston and Chicago marathons, and established himself as a local running standout in his age bracket.  In 2002, Mangan began competing in the masters division at the Empire State Games and continues to win medals in the 800-meter race.
He’s a member of the Checkers Running Club and competes in the USA Track and Field masters division.   Mangan averages about 20 local road races a year and is traditionally one of the top three male runners in his age division.
While attending Buffalo State College, Mangan ran on the cross country team and was a member of the 1981 New York State Indoor Track Championship team while running in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter events.   He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Buffalo State.
As a high school runner at Niagara Catholic High School, Mangan was a two-time All Catholic champion in track and field in the 800-meter event.
Mangan lives in Niagara Falls.
