Waynesburg, PA – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team evened up their record at .500 with their 80-72 non-conference road win against Waynesburg University December 1. After both teams were tied 38-38 at halftime, the Hawks out-scored the Yellow Jackets 42-34 over the final 20 minutes of competition to move to a 3-3 overall record. Keon Rembert (Bennetsville, SC/Archbishop Walsh) put together another double-double with game highs in points (21) and rebounds (13) for Hilbert.
With 10 minutes left in the game, Hilbert took the lead and never relinquished control. Waynesburg kept their deficit to just a single score for the next 6 minutes as the Hawks went 6 for 11 from the charity strip during that time frame. A thunderous dunk from 6-7 Rembert put the Hawks ahead 68-63 with 3:50 showing on the clock. The two-handed flush was part of a 7-0 run that moved the visitors to 72-63 and seemed to take the wind out of the home team.
Rembert had help along the way from freshman point guard CJ Hodge (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) who directed the squad during his 36 minutes of action shooting 4 for 6 from the floor (2-3 behind the arc) while passing for 3 assists. Sophomore Roman Brown (Buffalo, NY/South Park) chipped in his second double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) was a perfect 3-3 from the arc earning 9 points. Though it came in a losing effort, Waynesburg got a solid performance from junior forward Lou Galante, who tied for the team lead with 17 points and added eight rebounds to his night.
The Hawks have one more non-conference game (December 17 - Nazareth) left on their schedule but they now must focus on their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference league opponents. The first test will be Saturday, December 4th when they host La Roche College in a 4 pm start. The Red Hawks bring a 5-1 record (1-0 AMCC) to town having just beaten Mount Aloysius College by 4 points Dec. 1. They are lead offensively by senior guard Nate Wojciechowski with 14 ppg.
