Alfred, NY – When the game score is tied 15 times, fate has it that the team who possesses the ball last will win. With one second left on the clock, Alfred’s Josh Parker followed up his missed lay-up with 2 offensive rebounds and scored, giving the Saxons a 78-76 victory over Hilbert College November 27. Hilbert’s Keon Rembert (Bennetsville, SC/Archbishop Walsh) shot 6-8 from the floor and 9-12 from the foul linebut his 21 point, 9 rebound, 2 block shot effort didn’t carry the Hawks to victory.
The first 20 minutes was a back and forth scoring affair. Hilbert went into the locker room with a 40-38 advantage, but neither team held a larger than 4-point lead as they worked through eight ties. Rembert had 15 points leading all scorers at the break.
The Hawks jumped out to a 45-36 lead early in the second half, yet Alfred fought right back and tied it up eighty seconds later. The Saxons held their largest lead in the game for the first time at 1:26 (74-66) but Hilbert did not die. Junior Chris Parrott (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) scored 7 points in the Hawks comeback rally when his 3-pointer tied the game with 13 seconds left. Alfred owed the last possession and Parker’s rebound-score at the buzzer gave the Hawks their third loss of the season.
Parrott finished the game with 19 points and 4 steals and Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) chipped in 11. Alfred had four players hit for double digits with Mike Stopera netting 21. The Hawks went cold from the foul line in the second half making only 5-15 attempts, and although they dominated the boards (48-30), they gave up the one rebound that cost the game.
The Hawks (2-3) will travel to Waynesburg (PA) on December 1st for a non-conference game before they begin Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference league play December 4th. La Roche College comes to town for a 4 pm tip.
