ALFRED, NY – Alfred University’s Pat Smithgall scored 17 points and hauled in a game high 26 rebounds to help the Saxons hold off Hilbert College 79-77 in overtime Tuesday night at the McLane Center. The win improves Alfred to 1-2 on the season while Hilbert falls to 1-1.
Trailing 64-49 with 5:18 to play, Hilbert mounted an enormous come back as a Michael Reyes (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon) four-point play gave the Hawks a 70-69 lead with :51 remaining. The Saxons made three free throws in the final :36 to regain the lead at 72-70 before Hilbert’s Dallas Reinard (Smethport, PA/Smethport) raced 94 feet to connect on a lay-up with 1.8 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, both teams took turns holding the lead and the score was tied for the 11th time at 77-77 with 2:21 to play. Hilbert failed to score on their next two possessions and Alfred connected on some timely foul shooting down the stretch to go up 79-77 with :03 remaining. A desperation heave by Reinard came up short as time expired.
“We showed a lot of guts coming back in the final minutes,” said Hilbert coach Rob deGrandpre. “Unfortunately we couldn’t keep them off the boards, and they made us pay for it.” The Saxons held a 59-38 rebounding advantage with 24 coming on the offensive end.
Hilbert held a 31-27 lead at the half and held Alfred to just 21% shooting from the field during the first 20 minutes of play. The Saxons erupted for 45 second half points and shot 55% in the second stanza.
Reinard finished with a game-high 28 points followed by Corey Vander Sluis (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) who recorded 15 points and a team-high 16 boards for the Hawks. Glen Ufland (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon) connected on four three-pointers and finished with 14 points while Reyes rounded out the visitor’s double-digit scoring with 13 markers.
The Hawks will return home to face Keuka College (2-1) on Monday, November 27th at 7:00 pm.
