HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team earned an important conference win Friday night before letting one get away from them on Saturday at the Hafner Recreation Center. The Hawks downed La Roche College 72-50 to start the weekend, but missed a golden opportunity to pick up another victory with a 63-72 loss at the hands of Lake Erie College.
Against La Roche College, Hilbert took a commanding 34-22 lead into the locker room before outscoring the visiting Redhawks 38-28 in the second half. The Hawks won the battle on the boards with a 41-26 advantage and a gritty defense recorded 16 steals while holding the Redhawks to 37% shooting from the field.
The Hawks Dallas Reinard (Smethport, PA/Smethport) contributed game highs of 20 points and nine rebounds while also recording five steals. Corey Vander Sluis (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) added 14 points while Ron Dussett (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Traditional) came off the bench to chip in with nine points and eight boards for the winners.
Saturday’s game against the Lake Erie College Storm will be remembered as a game of missed opportunities. The Hawks held a 34-26 edge at the half and increased their lead to as many as 13 midway through the second stanza. An aggressive press by the visitors forced some costly Hilbert turnovers, and the Storm quickly took advantage while gaining the lead with just over six minutes to play. A late Hawks rally cut the Storm lead to 66-63 with 32 seconds remaining, but the Hawks faltered on their next possession and Lake Erie converted some timely free throws to sneak out with the win.
Reinard paced the Hawks with 24 points and Rocco DiJohn (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) chipped in with 10 in the losing effort.
Western New York bragging right s will be at stake next weekend at the Buffalo State Holiday Tournament. The Hawks will face the host Bengals at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Friday December 9th at 8:00 pm after local rivals Medaille College and D’Youville College battle at 6:00 pm. Saturday’s consolation game is scheduled for 6:00 pm with the championship game to follow at 8:00 pm.
