BROCKPORT, NY - The Hilbert College baseball team traveled to Brockport on April 30th for their only single 9-inning game of the season. The Eagles doubled up the visiting Hawks en route to their 18-9 victory improving to 19-15 overall. Several Hawks hit long balls taking multiple bases but Brockport’s Max Zimmerman hit three over the fence bombs earning 9 RBI, personally tying the Hawks scoring. With the non-conference loss, the Hawks drop to 5-26.

After taking a 3 run lead in the first inning, Brockport grabbed a quick 6-0 lead when Zimmerman hit his first homer, earning 3 RBI’s on his second at bat.
Hilbert’s sticks came alive at the top of the third with back-to-back doubles by Ryan LaCorte (Cheektowaga, NY/John F. Kennedy) and Matt Militello (Depew, NY/Lancaster) putting two runs on the board for the Hawks.
Good pitching and defensive play kept Brockport to only one run in the bottom of the 3rd: Hilbert’s Dave Cunningham hit his 3-run homer sending Jacob Simonick (Blasdell, NY/Orchard Park) and Matt Begeal (Northville, NY/Wells) around the bags. Nick Sherman’s (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) single got him on base, then Militello followed with his own triple making it a respectable 6-7 score in the middle of the inning.
Brockport’s second batter in the order earned a base with his single, and then crossed home when Zimmerman hit his second homer. The bottom of the 4th ended with 2 doubles and 4 runs scored stretching the lead back to 11-6.
Jim Pernick’s (Tonawanda, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) double started the 5th inning and helped the Hawks chip away at the lead but Zimmerman hit his second 3-run homer in the 6th inning to seal the game.
On the day, Cunningham was 1 of 3, with 3 RBI and 2 runs. He had strong support from Militello who went 2 for 5 with 2 hits and 2 RBI and Sherman’s 2 runs, 2 hits and 1 RBI.
Hilbert’s last double header game has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 6th at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. This game was moved due to anticipated weather issues on the Sunday, May 2nd date.
