Hamburg, NY: The Hilbert baseball team could not keep up with the bats of Medaille College on Wednesday afternoon as the Mavericks would swing their way to victory defeating the Hawks 22-3 in game one and 10-4 in game two. Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/ St. Joe’s Collegiate Inst.){pictured right} went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a solo home run to lead the Hawks offense on the day.
In game one the Mavericks used an eight-run inning and a five- run innin

Jake Simonick (Blasdell, NY/ Orchard Park) would score two runs while Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/ St. Francis) would add one as well to provide the three runs for the Hawks in game one. Each player recorded a double in the defeat.
Hilbert would jump on the scoreboard first in game two as Pernick’s single to center field would score Matt Militello (Depew, NY/ Lancaster) for the Hawk 1-0 lead after one inning. Medaille would answer back scoring single runs in the second and third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Medaille broke open the game with a four-run sixth inning building on their lead to give them an eight run advantage (9-1). In the bottom of the six, freshman Ed Heffron (Williamsville, NY/ Cardinal O’Hara) hit his first triple of the season earning an RBI on the play. Heffron would score on a Militello single to cut the deficit to six.
Medaille and Hilbert would trade runs in the seventh inning as Pernick would record his second home run of the season. The solo home run was not enough as the Mavericks would go on to win 10-4 and sweep the Hawks in conference play.
