HAMBURG, NY – Playing in their first home game of the new season, the Hilbert baseball team found out that home wasn’t so sweet on Saturday, April 10. After a lopsided first game victory (15-3), Frostburg State University held on in game two (6-2) to sweep the Hawks. After giving up 4 runs in the first inning of game two, Sophomore Pat Lagueras (Rochester, NY/ Charles Finney) pitched a complete game striking out three and walking two and kept the Hawks close through seven innings of play.
Frostburg (18-8, 6-2) notched their first runs in the morning game during the second inning. Their three-run lead wasn’t lived long as the Hawks earned two runs right away in the bottom of the second. Freshman Chris Hoak (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) wacked a double to the fence and knocked in 2 RBI’s to keep the score close. The Bobcats went on a 5-run inning to stretch their lead in the third, but when sophomore Matt Militello (Depew, NY/Lancaster) started with another Hawks’ double, it appeared as it the home team was ready to match their opponent’s offensive output. This was not the case. Frostburg finished the game outhitting the Hawks (15-8) with only 5 strike-outs compared to the Hawks’ 10. Four different hurlers were on the mound with sophomore Nick Sherman (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) taking his first loss in four games.
Senior Matt Begeal (Northville, NY/Wells) led the Hawks with two hits (1 double), one run and one RBI in their afternoon contest. Junior Frank Simmeth (Cheektowaga, NY/St. Mary’s) singled in the 4th, sending Begeal home for the Hawks’ first run. Militello’s double was quickly followed by Begeal’s double in the 5th. Militello scored closing the gap 5-2 with still 2 innings to stage a comeback. At the top of the 7th, Frostburg made the run around the bases untouched and finished the scoring for the day.
Hilbert (4-12, 1-3) travels to Franciscan University of Steubenville for a AMCC game on Sunday, April 11 with a 1 pm start.
