HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College director of athletics Richard Walsh has announced the appointment of Robert Gladwell as the Hawks new baseball coach.

“I am very pleased Rob accepted the opportunity to lead our baseball program. He understands the challenges that come with turning around a program,” said Walsh.

Gladwell comes to the Hamburg campus after spending last spring on Ron Nero’s staff at nearby Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) member Medaille College. He helped the Mavericks to a 13-29 mark and a seventh place finish in the conference while primarily working with the team’s infielders.

Gladwell has experience instructing at a variety of youth baseball clinics and currently works as part of the grounds-crew staff at Triple-A baseball’s Dunn Tire Park in Buffalo.

As a student-athlete at Brockport State, Gladwell was a four-year member of the baseball program and helped the Golden Eagles win the 2004 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship. The Golden Eagles advanced to the 2004 College World Series and won a school record 34 games that spring. As a junior Gladwell was a 2003 First-Team All-Conference selection and was recognized as a Second-Team NCAA Division III ABCA/Rawlings All-Star. He also received Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate Honorable Mention honors while helping the Golden Eagle to a then school record 31 wins.

“Rob was an outstanding student-athlete at Brockport and understands what it takes to succeed academically and athletically at the Division III level,” added Walsh. “I’m confident he will provide the leadership and energy to make Hilbert a competitive program in the AMCC.”

“I am excited to be joining the Hilbert College athletics family,” said Gladwell. “I’m looking forward to getting on the field and working with our student-athletes and building a winning program.”

Gladwell graduated from Brockport in December of 2004 and earned a B.S. in physical education while earning teacher certification credentials.

He currently resides in Cheektowaga, NY.
