Morasco Fans 11 in Win
BUFFALO, NY – Hilbert College topped D’Youville College 8-1 in game one before falling 5-3 in game two of a non-conference doubleheader baseball game on Tuesday. The split moves the Hawks to 3-30 overall, while the Spartans drop to 1-13.
The visiting Hawks got on the board early in the first game taking advantage of three consecutive RBI singles by Joe Ferrara (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Derek Frentz (Little Valley, NY/Little Valley) and Corey Vander Sluis (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) to lead 3-0 after one inning. Hilbert would go up 5-0 in the second as sophomore Dallas Reinard (Smethport, NY/Smethport) would rip a two-RBI double to spark the offense. The Hawks would later add three more insurance runs, before D’Youville platted an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
Dunn Tire Park belonged to freshman right-hander Steve Morasco (Memphis, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) as he would go the distance, allowing only three Spartan hits. He would go on to strikeout 11 of the 25 batters he faced on the afternoon and give up just one unearned run. Morasco is currently ranked 26th in Division III baseball for strikeout’s per nine innings (10.7).
Game two saw the two local rivals take a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the fourth inning where the Hawks fortune would run out. D’Youville would go on to put up four runs on just two hits to take the lead, 4-1. Hilbert would try to claw back in the sixth, as Josh Cahall (Ripley, OH/Ripley) blasted a triple and would later score on a wild pitch closing the gap to two. In the seventh, Reinard crushed his second double of the day, scoring John Koniniec (Depew, NY/Depew) who reached base after being hit by a pitch. The Hawks would get no closer, as the Spartans recorded three consecutive fly-outs to secure the win.
Hilbert will continue their schedule as they travel to SUNYIT Friday for a non-conference doubleheader. Game one in Utica, NY is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.
