HAMBURG, NY - Softballs were sailing over the left field fence in the AMCC double header contest between Hilbert College and D'Youville College April 25. The Spartans took both games improving the 10-4 (13-11 overall) while Hilbert dropped to 4-14 (8-19) after the 7-6 and 9-3 scores. Amber Grosch went six for eight and scored two runs while Devan Jonathan finished with eight strike outs over the course of the 10.2 innings she pitched.
In the first game, D'Youville's Abby Campbell earned her 2 RBI long ball as the third batter of the game. She gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Hilbert's Kateland Ball chipped one above the yellow protective plastic in the bottom of the fourth inning cutting into the 3-1 lead. Shannon Evans earned the Spartans second homerun in the top of the 5th and Hannah Norton followed suit one inning later giving D'Youville a 7-1 advantage.
The Hawks rallied in the sixth inning when Ball's RBI sent Grosch home. Rachel Collier knocked the Hawks second dinner out the park sending in three more runs cutting the score to 7-6. Hilbert held the Spartans defensively at the top of the seventh as did D'Youville to Hilbert which ended the game.
The Hawks finished with more hits (10-7) and had two more appearances at the plate, but D'Youville captured the game because of the multi-run home runs earned throughout the game.
In the night cap, D'Youville's Gabby Lathrop (2 RBI), Norton, and Campbell (2 RBI) knotched more long hits enroute the 9-3 final for the visitors. Grosch, Emili Ripley and Natalie Whitman each went 3 for 4 and Allison Hall had two hits during the seven inning game. Ripley took the loss striking out one in her 3.1 innings pitched.
