GREENVILLE, PA – Ryan Wagner, ranked 13th in the nation in goals per game, connected for seven, added two assists and had game-high nine ground balls for Hilbert College as they dominated Thiel College in their 17-6 victory March 23. The Hawks outshot Thiel 2 to 1 (57-28), won the ground ball (51-35) and faceoff (18-25) battles as they improved to 4-1 this spring. Pat Lunderman (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) earned another victory in net playing every minute of each game for Hilbert this season.
Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) opened the scoring at 14:09 in the first quarter and proceeded to hit the back of the net two more times before the 10 minute mark. The Hawks led 7-3 after one session with four different players contributing. Hilbert continued to attack the goal in the second period outshooting the Tomcats 17-5 yet they only outscored Thiel by one goal (3-2).
Thiel regrouped after half time and played somewhat even with the Hawks, even though the visitors padded their lead with three more goals. The hustling Hawks continued to win ground balls in the final quarter extending their lead to 17-6.
Josh Baker (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) had 13 shots which earned him two goals as well as three assists; Nick Kieffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) picked up seven ground balls and two goals along with winning nine of 13 face-offs for the day. John Jewett (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) and Greg Zitnik (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had almost perfect placement on net as they were 2 for 4 (Jewett) and 2 for 3 (Zitnik) goals off shots.
Hilbert continues to roll through their independent league schedule as a first year Division III sport. The Hawks host La Roche College on March 26.
