Poughkeepsie, NY – The Hilbert College men’s volleyball team took Bard and New Paltz to four-set matches, but returned to Hamburg going 0-3 after competing  in the United Volleyball Conference’s final cross-over weekend March 5th and 6th at Vassar College.

Hilbert opened the weekend with a three-set loss (25-17, 25-12, 25-14) against Vassar March 5. The host institution had 9 service aces, 35 kills and 10 team blocks while Hilbert struggled to get into any rhythm during the match. Dan Wolfe (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) and Fred Sickau (Eden, NY/Eden) led the Hawks at the net with 5 kills apiece and RJ Sykora (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) passes for 12 assists. Anthony Blasz (Eden, NY/Eden) and Rob Moyes (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley Baptist) got to 9 digs each, one-upping Sykora and Wolfe. Freshman Adam Weaver (Stow, OH/Archbishop Hoban) made a brief appearance in the first two sets, but did not play the remainder of the weekend still recovering from the ankle sprain suffered a few weeks ago.

Sunday was a different day for the Hawks. They were much more competitive and gave Bard a good scare in the rematch from earlier in the season when Hilbert lost in three sets. Hilbert opened the match with a 25-12 victory and then suffered through three close sets falling in a 3-1 loss (12-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22). Sickau stormed the net with 17 kills and 7 total blocks. Wolfe took the reins on passing for 39 assists while getting to 13 digs. Hilbert had 13. 5 total team blocks and finished with a .211 hitting percentage.

Hilbert’s final weekend match against SUNY New Paltz followed the same suit as the earlier morning event when the Hawks claimed a 25-21 first-set victory.  Yet their celebration was short lived and they fell 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 in the next three sets. Adam Clabo’s .214 attack percentage and 16 digs led the Hawks. Sickau had a team-high 16 kills and Wolfe passed for 30 assists.

The Hawks (1-18, 0-8) continue to fight for their first UVC victory with only one more game still to be played against Medaille College (March 18). Up next for the Hawks in their non-conference schedule is a home match with Nazareth (20-3, 8-0 UVC) March 8 at 7pm. Then Hilbert travels to D’Youville College March 11th but serves as host for Kean College in the 6pm match.
