Utica, NY – The 2011 Hilbert men’s volleyball season opened this past weekend competing in the six-team SUNYIT tournament January 22 and 23rd. Dan Wolfe (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) was named to the six-man All-Tournament team as the Hawks had their ups and downs early in the season returning to Western New York 0-4.
Hilbert’s first match January 22 was against the host institution, SUNYIT. Freshman Adam Weaver (Stow, OH/Archbishop Hoban) led the Hawks in the 4-set loss (25-20, 25-20, 18-25, 25-21) with 19 kills. Seniors Dan Wolfe had 7 kills with .875 hitting percentage and RJ Sykora (Stow, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) passed for 30 assists. In the second match of the day, Bard College was too powerful for the Hawks, as they captured the 3-set victory (25-20, 25-18, 25-18). Sykora again distributed for 21 assists as Weaver finished with 10 kills.
Day two began with a 4-set loss to Sage Colleges (25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21) in an early morning match. Sykora had 5 kills (.500 hitting) to pair with his 39 assists and team-leading 12 digs and Weaver led the offense with 23 kills. Lasell College (Newton, MA) took a quick 3-set win (25-13, 25-18, 25-13) from the Hawks, sending Hilbert home at 0-4 to start the season.
Stevenson won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. Stevenson freshman Austin Jacoby was named the tournament's most valuable player after registering a hit percentage of .395 and finishing with four-match totals of 71 kills, 23 digs, five total blocks, two assists and one service ace. Other All-Tournament team members joining Wolfe and Jacoby were Henry Kasiske (Bard), Spencer Parker (Lasell), Spence Hilland (Sage), and Ryan Meller (SUNYIT).
The men’s volleyball team’s home-opener is January 26th against cross-town rival D’Youville College. Match time is set for 7 pm at the Hafner Recreation Center.
