Houghton, NY – Houghton College’s roster depth was a major factor in their 63-30 victory over Hilbert College in women’s basketball on November 30. The NAIA scholarship-funded team went 12 players deep where every athlete played at least 12 minutes each. The Hawks (1-4) found themselves down at half time (41-15) but played a more competitive second half (22-15).
Hilbert junior Mary Zinni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) lead the eight-women squad with 9 points, all scored from behind the 3-point arc. The Hawks were pressured defensively the entire 40 minutes with aggressive, fresh bodies. This strategy resulted in Hilbert’s low shooting percentage (22.9%) from the floor.
Houghton had three players hit for double digits as Kara Schrader netted the game-high 12 points. Hilbert’s Amber Grosch (Depew, NY/Depew) pulled in a game-high 8 rebounds.
The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) portion of the Hawks schedule beings on Saturday, December 3rd, when La Roche College travels up from Pittsburgh, PA for the 2 pm tip. The Red Hawks currently hold the top position in the early season standings (4-1). The Preseason Player of the Year, senior Chantelle Jennings comes to town for the last time averaging 16.6 points in 32 minutes of time through 5 games.
