Hamburg, NY - The Hilbert College men’s basketball program is one step closer to opening their 2010-11 season after the 94-68 exhibition loss to Durham College (Oshawa, Ontario) November 13. The Lord’s athleticism and team chemistry lead to their second half surge, outscoring the Hawks by 30 points earning their 11th win of the season. Durham’s Eric Smith was the game’s high scorer/rebounder with 32 points (12-18 FG) and 14 rebounds. This contest doesn’t count in Hilbert’s overall record but it did provide the coaching staff with an opportunity to gage the Hawk’s abilities before their first game on November 16th at Marywood University (Scranton, PA).
Keon Rembert (Bennetville, SC/Archbishop Walsh) recorded his first double double of the season (11 points/13 rebounds), but it was Dan McFarland's (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary’s) 27 points (10-15 FG {4-4 3FG}, 3-4 FT) that led the Hawk’s offense. Chipping in 13 points with 6 assists was freshman CJ Hodges (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili). Hilbert took at 41-37 lead into half time (48.6 FG%) yet cooled off the next twenty minutes scoring only 27 second half points.
Having played eleven games prior to today’s contest, Durham College showed how execution and timing are vital to creating success. The Lords scored easy lay ups off lob passes or back door cuts multiple times during the game’s final ten minutes. With only 6 second half turnovers, the visitors put more points on the board and limited the Hawks offense with their 11 second stanza steals.
After the Hawks open up their season at Marywood, they return home to host their Hilbert College Tip-Off Tourney, Friday/Saturday, November 19 and 20. John Jay College will play Keuka College at 6 pm then the Hawks host Morrisville at 8 pm.
