Fredonia, NY: The Hilbert baseball team fell just short in both games against non conference opponent Fredonia State on Sunday, April 5. The Hawks were lead by senior Dave Cunningham (Cheektowaga, NY/ Maryvale) who registered three hits, two RBI’s and a home run on the day.

In the first game of the day, Fredonia took an early 6-0 lead after four innings of action. Cunningham started the offensive run for the Hawks in top of the fifth inning when he sent ball over the fence for a home run giving Hilbert their first run of the game. Sophomore Nick Sherman (Lancaster, NY/ Lancaster) followed suit one batter later when he hit Hilbert’s second home run of the game cutting the 6-0 deficit to four.  Hilbert would earn two more runs in the top of the fifth and trail the Blue Devils 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Hilbert and Fredonia would exchange runs for the remainder of the game with Hilbert scoring one final run in the top of the seventh but coming up just short, 11-9.

The Blue Devil’s offense got off to another fast start in the game two as their offensive efforts mirrored game one’s offensive efforts by generating a 6-1 lead over Hilbert after three innings of play.

Hilbert’s bats came alive in the fourth inning as they earned two runs from Jim Pernick (Tonawanda, NY/ St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) and Colby Miller (Rochester, NY/ Irondequoit) who hit back to back doubles. The top of the fifth inning provided two more runs from the Hawks as Pernick’s second hit of the game drove in two runs cutting Fredonia’s lead to 6-5.

Hilbert was unable to match the final two runs Fredonia would score once again resulting in a loss for the Hawks. Hilbert fell 8-5 in game two dropping their record to 4-10 on the season.

The Hawks will face conference opponents Frostburg State at home on Saturday, April 10 at 1 p.m. and will travel to Franciscan on Sunday for their second AMCC match up of the weekend.
