BUFFALO, NY – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team stepped on the court ready to take control of the game early at D’Youville College on January 6. After forty minutes of intense play, the Hawks and Spartans fought into five minutes of overtime to find D’Youville secure their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference by the score of 95-86. Hilbert drops to 1-10 (0-6) and D’Youville improves to 3-8 (1-6).
Hilbert came out the gates on fire shooting 51% from the floor in the first half. They settled for a 45-34 lead heading into the locker room after their biggest lead of 15 with just over 2 minutes left in first half. The second half of the game started with D’Youville continuing their comeback, but Hilbert found themselves again with a double digit lead eleven minutes in. Once again, D’Youville found ways to cut the score and forced the game into overtime on a jump shot made by Greg Osika with 5 seconds left in regulation. The overtime period found the home team shooting 67% from the floor (4-6) and 75% from the foul line (6-8) compared to Hilbert’s 28% (2-7) and 2-2 from the charity stripe.
Hilbert had three players finish the 45 minute game scoring double digits with junior guard Cody Troutman (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley, JCC) and freshman forward Roman Brown (Buffalo, NY/South Park) each hitting for 20 points. Freshman Jay Weigel (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) earned his first double-double of his collegiate career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lionel Ellis lead D’Youville with 24 points (9-10 free throws).
Hilbert will return to action on Saturday, January 9 when they travel to central PA to play at Mount Aloysius College with a 3 pm tip.
