Zinni Scores 13 Points in Loss to Altoona

ALTOONA, PA:  The Hilbert women’s basketball team traveled to Altoona where they faced AMCC opponent Penn State Altoona, on Sunday, December 13, at 1 p.m. Altoona outscored the Hawks 90-38 to pick up the conference win. Sophomore guard Mary Zinni (Batavia, NY/ Batavia) led all scores for Hilbert with 13 points. The loss drops the Hawks to 0-10 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

In the opening minutes of the first half, play remained even between the conference opponents. Hilbert jumped out to a 5-2 lead with a layup from sophomore forward Julie Bossard (Arkport, NY/ Canisteo-Greenwood) followed by a three- pointer from freshman forward Devin Davis( Waterbury, CT/ Sacred Heart) assisted by Mary Zinni just seconds later. Altoona began to pull away at the 11 minute mark leading the Hawks 20-9. Altoona would increase their lead to 28 heading into halftime leading the hawks 44-16.
Altoona held the Hawks scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half until a three pointer by Mary Zinni would help cut the deficit created by the Lions. Freshman guard Jessica Morey (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield) earned her first points of the season off an assist from freshman guard Dontrell Young (Rochester, NY/ Charles Finney). Freshman forward Katie Newton (Elba, NY/ Elba) also earned her first points of the season contributing six points off the bench and a team high eight rebounds.
The Lions had four players scoring double figures in the conference match up. Alicia Glasser led the Lions with 23 points, shooting 3-5 from the three point line. The Lions also out-rebounded the Hawks 38-29 for the contest. Penn State Altoona is now 9-2 overall and 4-2 in AMCC play.
The Hilbert women’s basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, January 6, as they face another conference opponent, D’Youville College. The game will be played at D’Youville at 6 p.m.
