NEW PALTZ, NY – The Hilbert men’s volleyball team completed their United Volleyball Conference cross-over weekend competition with a season-sweep over SUNYIT March 9th before the Hawks suffered losses to two nationally ranked teams. Junior Adam Weaver and senior Scott Ross were consistent at the net all weekend which kept Hilbert close. The Hawks moved to 2-8 in UVC and 5-16 overall.

In three almost identical set scores (25-19,25-20,25-19) Hilbert swept their match against the Wildcats from SUNYIT March 9. Weaver and Ross each reached double-digit kills with 14 and 10 respectively. Ryan Ratajczak’s 10 digs led a strong defensive presence as Weaver and Korey Schwab earned 9 digs each. David Mellerski assisted 26 balls and passed 8 digs. The Hawks finished with .204 hitting and had 10 service aces with Fred Sickau leading the way with 3.

The following day, Hilbert squared off against #6 Stevens Tech and #7 New Paltz. Both games Sunday ended in 3-set losses, but the Hawks were competitive in each set.  Weaver and Ross were aggressive in the front line, both credited with 10 kills in the 25-19,25-16,25-17 loss to Stevens. The same two Hawks earned all three Hilbert service aces and Weaver led with game high 9 digs.

Stevens (9-1, 19-6) finished with 48 kills (.487) and 7.5 blocks as well as 14 services errors. Hilbert earned 26 kills (.135).

Against New Paltz (8-3 UVC, 17-5), Hilbert took a little while to get going in the first set but came back strong the next games (25-17,25-22,25-20). Weaver’s .214 hitting produced 11 kills and Mellerski added 26 assists. Anthony Blasz earned the Hawks only service aces (2) in the last match of the weekend.

The Hawks have a few days off before they return to action. Hilbert will travel to Erie, PA March 21st  to take on Penn State Behrend. Hilbert closes out their home portion of their schedule with back-to-back matches against Behrend (April 3) and Thiel College (April 9).
