Kolin is an authority on the Holocaust, a period addressed in his book One Family: Before and During the Holocaust. He can discuss its history, the role of political and religious leaders and other bystanders, victim reactions, and the Holocaust and the second generation. His other focus is on the history of terrorism, including the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and its domestic and global impacts, left- and right-wing terrorism, and terrorist organizations.
