William (Bill) Schultz returns for his third year as the head coach of the men’s volleyball program in 2012-13.
In his second year directing the program, Schultz led the Hawks to a five-game improvement, finishing 6-21. After his first season guiding the squad through a minor conference change, Schultz is excited about the stability his program is moving through and the future of Division III men’s volleyball at the national level.
In 2011, Hilbert joined the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) after breaking away from the North Eastern College Volleyball Association (NECVA). Beginning this 2012 season, now that there are enough men’s volleyball programs offered within the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the Hawks will also play for an AMCC championship in addition to the UVC championship. The UVC champion receives an automatic bid to the newly created men’s Division III NCAA national tournament April 27 and 28, 2012.
Schultz comes to Hilbert after serving as the boys’ volleyball head coach at Grand Island since 2004. After only a few years coaching, his team won the divisional title, and he was named the Niagara Frontier League Coach of the Year in 2008. Schultz’s team followed that honor up with an appearance in the Section VI volleyball championship game in 2009. Schultz will continue to coach the high school team while serving as the head coach at Hilbert College.
“I look forward to creating a positive environment where my Hilbert athletes will work hard, and play hard,” said Schultz. “I expect my team to give 100% effort at all times. I focus on technique to ensure the best results from each player. And I look forward to the recruiting process where I can bring in like-minded athletes to the program.”
As a player, Schultz’s career is quite impressive. He was a member of the nationally recognized D’Youville College team and was named a Division III First Team All-American in 2004, as well as a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Western Division Player of the Year in both 2003 and 2004. Schultz extended his playing days when he competed professionally for the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Beach Tour for two seasons. During that time, he qualified for the Main Draw Tournament and faced the Olympic Gold Medalists. Schultz received his associate’s degree from Niagara County Community College in physical education and continued his studies in elementary education at D’Youville College.
He currently resides in Cheektowaga with his wife Katie.

Bill Schultz completed his men’s volleyball staff with the hiring of Andy Nawotka during the 2011-2012 academic year. Schultz expects Nawotka to assist in all aspects of the program as well as serve as a successful role model to the current Hawks. Nawotka is in his second season, with Hilbert being his first collegiate coaching position after his 2010 graduation from Medaille College.
Dressed in Blue and Gold, Nawotka was a fierce competitor for Medaille. In 2010 he was named to the 1st Team All-Conference, Western Division in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA); for the week of March 10th, he was named the NECVA Western Division Player of the Week; and was a NECVA All-Academic Team member (2008 and 2009) carrying a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher. He is ranked in many career categories for the Mavericks: 2nd in blocks, 6th in attempts, 6th in kills, tied for 8th in aces and 10th in games played. Upon graduation, Nawotka was inducted in the Chi Alpha Sigma, a National College Athlete Honor Society.
Nawotka currently works as an operations specialist at M&T Bank Central Operations and remains active in the volleyball community through various tournaments and in many leagues. He graduated from Medaille College (BA in psychology) and from Grand Island high school.
