HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team got back on the winning track today after capturing another Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over Penn State Altoona, 72-61. With the home victory, the Hawks improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in league standings, and they continue to impress their fans with the program’s best start since Hilbert became an NCAA member back in the early 1990’s. Isaac Bushey stayed on the court for 32 minutes and led the balanced Hawk charge with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Altoona’s Jonathan Ross earned game-high scoring honors with 29 points for the 3-4 (2-2) Lions. Chipping in double-figure scoring for Hilbert were Anthony Hodge (11), CJ Hodge and Dan McFarland (10).

Hilbert opened the game with their three quarter court press which resulted in the game’s first score. CJ Hodge striped Durant Harvin {in photo to left} and then fed Anthony Hodge {in photo to right} . On two occasions in the first half, Hilbert was able to stretch their lead to seven points:  they opened the game with a 7-0 run by 13:46 and closed the half with that same advantage. Twice Altoona knotted the game in the first half, but Hilbert  maintained their composure and built a cushion again. Anthony Hodge scored all his points in the first half shooting five of seven from the floor.

Matt Gehret started the second half with a score which dipped the spread to three points, but that was the closest the Lions would get the rest of the game. Hilbert went on 13-3 run (43-30) and finished the game trading baskets with Altoona.
Trevor Stark distributed three assists and finished with two steals while scoring nine points off the bench. Gehret netted 11 points for the visitors and John Brennan cleaned the glass for game high 12 rebounds.
Hilbert out rebounded Altoona (39-35) had three fewer turnovers and grabbed three more steals from their full court press. The Hawks found their shooter’s touch in the second half improving to 48.5% while holding Altoona to 38.2%. Hilbert made five three-point shots and limited Altoona to one for nine behind the arc.
The Hawks hit the road with their women’s team on December 12. They travel to Keystone (PA) for a 5 / 7 pm double header. The men’s team closes the 2012 portion of the season with a home contest December 15 against Elmira College (3pm).
