BUFFALO, NY – Hilbert’s huge 49-point second-half surge propelled the Hawks to a 71 – 53 victory at D’Youville College January 17. With the win, the Hawks move to 7-3 and hold onto 4th placed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference standings with eight games remaining. D’Youville dropped to 1-7 and 2-13 overall.
Anthony Hodge secured game high honors with 19 points followed by freshman teammate Jerame Owens’ 18. Both Hawks grabbed nine rebounds and played a big role defensively; Owens finished with three blocks and two steals and Hodge swiped six steals.
Trevor Stark came off the bench and added 11 points, five assists and three steals. Dan McFarland passed for seven assists with his seven points. D’Youville’s Alex Akpan earned the game’s only double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The hosts took a 32 – 22 half time lead after shooting 50% from the floor while holding the Hawks to 31% shooting and shutting them down from beyond the arc (0-7). Hodge and Owens combined for 12 of the 22 half time tallies.
Owens hit three straight shots and Stark hit a three-pointer in Hilbert’s 13-2 run to open the second half. Both teams traded baskets their next three possessions before Hilbert exploded offensively and sprinted away from the Spartans. Balanced touches and scoring on the court made it difficult for D’Youville to defend Hilbert.
Hilbert improved to 50% shooting from the floor while holding the Spartans to 25% in the second half. By the final horn, the Hawks out-rebounded D’Youville by four (43-39) and fought for 17 offensive boards, and swatted a team total five blocks.
The Hawks return to Hamburg this weekend when they host Franciscan University January 19 at 3pm.
