BRADFORD, PA – The Hilbert College baseball team split AMCC league games at Bradford April 12 when they shut out the Panthers 2-0 to start the day before Bradford rebounded to capture the nightcap, 5-2. With the win, the Hawks tied their program’s win record in the AMCC as they improved to 3-7 with six more conference games left on the schedule. Senior Chris Hoak finished with three hits for the day scoring one run in the process. Nick Sherman took the win on the mound improving to 4-4.
Both teams played scoreless baseball until the top of the fourth when Hilbert earned a few hits off Bradford’s Phelps. Joe Pernick singled to center field before Hoak hit the identical spot on the greens. Jim Pernick pushed the ball to left field and that hit sent his brother across home plate. The Hawks put their second run on the board when Ryan Ilardi’s sac bunt gave Pat Lagueras time to sprint home in the fifth inning. Neither Hilbert nor Bradford could muster enough offense to get another runner home and the game ended in the Hawks’ favor. Sherman struck out five with only one walk. Phelps gave up six hits in his seven innings on the mound.
Bradford led the Hawks 5-0 by the bottom of the third inning in the second game then went scoreless the rest of the way. With a 2-out count, Hilbert put two runs on the board in the sixth inning giving the Hawks life. Hoak singled and Jim Pernick walked as the third and four batters of the inning. A throwing error led to both runners moving around the bases and a score by Hoak. Pernick made it home before the inning ended in a run-down pick off at second base. Garrett Pauley took the loss going six innings, giving up five hits and earning two strikeouts.
Hilbert turns around and plays a non-conference game at home April 13 against D’Youville College with first pitch at 2pm. The Athletic Department is closing out the DIII Week of celebration with a tailgating party for the student-athletes to attend at 3pm.
